Nature provides services to the economy worth billions of dollars. This value is being estimated through to initiatives like TEEB (The Economics of Ecosystems & Biodiversity). It is fostered by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the EU and different national governments, and its objective is to determine ecosystems’ value and halt their destruction.
Fundación Global Nature has been working for many years on “Business and Biodiversity”, supporting the integration of biodiversity and ecosystem services. We started in 2010 coordinating in Spain the European Business and Biodiversity Campaign. Since then we have collaborated with multiple entities and supported different initiatives.
We currently participate in the coordination in Spain of the Business and Biodiversity Working Group. It was created in the framework of the National Environment Congress (CONAMA) but its activity is constant between editions. More than 50 companies, administration and non-for-profit entities are represented in this working group. We are also strategic members of the Spanish Business and Biodiversity Initiative (IEEB) managed by Biodiversity Foundation – Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment. We belong to the EUBusiness @ Biodiversity Platform and to the Natural Capital Coalition.
We regularly collaborate with businesses in different areas:
- Elaboration of strategies and assessments
- Development of Biodiversity Action Plans
- Design and implementation of in situ conservation actions
- Elaboration of guidelines, standards, codes and technical instructions
- Stakeholder engagement and participatory design of biodiversity conservation measures
- Development of indicators
- Communication, dissemination and training actions
A tener en cuenta
Biological diversity and ecosystem services depend on businesses, and the costs derived from their loss and degradation must be taken into account in corporate decision-making
Toma de decisiones
We facilitate the identification, quantification and/or estimation of the dependencies and environmental impacts relevant to decision making and reporting
Strategies and actions
We collaborate with businesses in the development of their business case, to show the strategic importance and opportunities linked to a better biodiversity and ecosystem services management.
We work together on the integration of this concept in corporate strategies to establish their commitment with biodiversity conservation through the development of policies, objectives and transparent reporting formulas. The corporate strategies facilitate the management of identified risks and opportunities, making use of the mitigation hierarchy. We propose and implement measures that tend to avoid, in the first place, those avoidable impacts as well as minimisation and restoration measures (or compensation measures only when it is necessary) that tend to Positive Net Impact.
We are also experienced in the determination of stakeholders and the establishment and implementation of alliances.
We have experience in the development of “biodiversity checks”. This analysis identifies for each entity its dependencies and impacts on biodiversity. Through the analysis, we identify for each entity its dependencies and impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem services and we assess the associated risks and opportunities. This diagnosis is the basis to elaborate specific strategies:
The answer of the assessed companies show that the results of the check can be useful for a better understanding of their impacts and their relationship with biodiversity. Several businesses have started to implement the recommendations of the checks (e.g. standards regarding biodiversity for suppliers, ecological improvements in facilities, assessment and reduction of the use of ingredients coming from the regions that are the richest in biodiversity –hotspots). In addition, the indicator and parameters used in the checks are useful for the definition of objectives and progress indicators.
Biodiversity Corporate Strategy and Biodiversity Action Plans
The Corporate Biodiversity Strategy is the tool that allows the company to achieve its commitments with biodiversity and ecosystem services.
The Biodiversity Action Plans are planning tools focused on conservation and the management of biodiversity, ecosystem services and stakeholders in a specific environment. We assess companies like Gas Natural Fenosa or Nestlé,that work on sensitive sites, for example on specific projects that specially affect biodiversity or ecosystem services, or at a product or service scale, through measures for the supply chain.
Identification and analysis of stakeholders to know their vision concerning specific aspects of a plan or project at a local level.
Training and communication
We provide training courses for companies in collaboration with other entities or through the organization of specific activities. The training activities provide staff with the necessary knowledge to design and implement Strategies, Action Plans or specific biodiversity management measures.
- The creation of the content of the training course: compilation of the information and preparation in an attractive format to be distributed to students.
- The organisation of the online or face-to-face training course, assessment of the participants and documentation.
- The recording of the course to be replicated in different locations.
LIFE BioStandards Project
The objective of the European project LIFE BioStandards is to promote the integration of matters related to biodiversity in very different standards related to the agrifood sector, such as Rainforest Alliance, Global G.A.P, Fairtrade, Origin Denominations, Protected Geographical Indications or internal Sustainable Sourcing Codes from companies in the sector. The project will develop an analysis of the current situation in Europe and worldwide and a tool will be developed to assess the situation of biodiversity in farms through comparable indicators.
A monitoring protocol will be determined regarding certification and biodiversity in the agrifood sector, collaborating with certificating entities and responsible staff in agrifood companies as well as recommendations and information campaigns in different countries in the EU.
Fundación Global Nature participates in this initiative together with AUF! (Germany), Global Nature Fund (Germany), Insituto Técnico Superior de Lisboa (Portugal), Lake Constance Foundation (Germany) and Solagro (France). El project is cofinanced by the EC LIFE instrument and supported by international entities like ISEAL.
