Alliance with Nestlé for sustainable sourcing and climate change mitigation
- General information
Food production has been intensified in the last decades, resulting in environmental impacts. FAO points out that farming, especially the most intensive models, is one of the main drivers for biodiversity loss and GHG emissions. However, these models are a true fact that from Fundación Global Nature we do not want to ignore. For its scale, small changes in this field can lead to significant sustainability gains.
Over the last years, we have established a system for accompanying the most important Nestlé vegetable suppliers in Europe. All the volume supplied is assessed in at least 3 years against 30 different agri-environmental indicators covering topics such as soil, nutrients, water, pest control, food waste, etc. As a result, suppliers take action by establishing agronomic improvement plans and biodiversity action plans, which cover the gaps identified.
In the last year, we have included in this journey all the Spanish Nestlé dairy farms. In this case, the objective is reaching the climate neutrality by 2050, a global commitment announced by the company. Our mission is therefore supporting farmers in this transition towards a more competitive, biodiversity- and climate-friendly farming activity.
