- General information
Our commitment to the environmental protection led us to participate in the creation of the Spanish Association of Marine Waste (AEBAM). We share the objectives of: raising awareness of the environmental impact that waste dumping in the sea is producing; promoting the establishment of strategies; minimizing the use of plastics; and circular economy.
Marine litter consists of items that have been deliberately discarded, unintentionally lost, or transported by winds and rivers, into the sea and on beaches. It mainly consists of plastics, wood, metals, glass, rubber, clothing and paper. Land-based sources account for up to 80% of marine litter – these include tourism, sewage and illegal or poorly managed landfills. The main sea-based sources are shipping and fishing.
Marine litter have a high socio-economic impact on tourism (landscapes degradation), fishing (deterioration of fish stocks) and the shipping (safety).
They also produce damage to the sea ‘s biodiversity. In addition, the wastes travel with the sea currents are a dispersion vector of pollutants and invasive species.
With the support of several donors we have developed numerous conservation actions with stakeholders like professional fishermen, divers, with the technological institute of plastics, and with AEBAM partners (Asociacion Vertidos Cero): raising awareness among the population, cleaning miles of coastline with volunteers and researching the impact of plastic in the sea.
