The effects of climate change that affect the Southern European Region have a direct impact on its forests, which also affects the socio-economic structure of the region and the population that depends on them. The increase in temperatures, the reduction of precipitations or a greater incidence of extreme weather events foreseen for the coming 30 years, will exacerbate these impacts.
However, the adaptation of these forest areas is not only necessary, but also feasible. Therefore, we develop in this project the methodology and tools needed to generate and integrate adaptation measures in public and private management plans, which will allow to increase the resilience of these systems with respect to timber production, as well as other productions such as resin, beekeeping, mushrooms, truffles, pastures or ecosystem services these forests provide.
We develop a computer tool for adaptation to climate change for the forestry sector and associated services, which integrates information regarding climate risk and the spatial distribution of forest areas for the near future. This tool will also have an online simplified version for wider dissemination.
Furthermore, we produce a technical referent with the identified adaptation measures, modify the Area Books of the province of Soria and compile all the results and proposals for adaptive forestry so that they can be transferred to the main stakeholders at regional, national and European scale.
We also include the adaptation measures in the forest certifications PEFC and FSC, and look for the support of the CSR of the Spanish business sector so they can be orientated towards afforestation projects.
Foresters, beekeepers, hunters and farmers; private companies, certification entities, conservation organizations and universities; regional, national and European administrations, we all unite efforts in this project to succeed in adaptation.
