How to minimise the effects of climate change in agriculture? How to incorporate the risks derived from global warming in the agricultural sector into decision-making and production processes? Under the name AgriAdapt, social participation for adaptation to climate change in the agricultural sector, the project is aimed at farmers in different parts of Spain with the intention of addressing the main challenges facing agriculture in the face of climate change.
The aim is to promote adaptation to climate change in the countryside through the mobilisation of actors, the assessment of climate risk with diagnostic tools, the co-design of adaptation measures in different agro-climatic contexts and the dissemination and transfer of the knowledge generated.
The project envisages holding workshops in different provinces of the Valencian Community, Castilla-La Mancha and Navarra on strategic cereal crops, vineyards, olive trees and nuts. The conclusions reached in each territory will be passed on to agricultural associations and cooperative groups, seeking a multiplier effect throughout the farming community.
Through this initiative, farmers will be able to implement effective measures to make their crops more resilient to climate change. To develop this project, Global Nature has the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, through the Call for subsidies for the implementation of projects that contribute to implementing the National Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change (2021-2030).
For the assessment of impacts and risks in the agricultural sector, there will be an innovative tool that allows quick and easy calculation of Agroclimatic Indicators (ACI) based on climate projections. This application, called CANARI, covers the needs of the different types of crops covered by the project, facilitating decision-making at the local level and helping the sector to prevent the consequences of climate change.
