Nut cultivation has grown significantly in Spain in recent years. In addition to the increase in production and the area planted, there are potentially attractive returns for farmers and the agri-food industry. With the aim of reducing the impact of this type of farming on agricultural ecosystems, the Global Nature Foundation is working with Lizard Agro to improve biodiversity conservation on almond-producing farms in Zaragoza, Huesca and Lleida.
The work of this project focuses specifically on making almond production compatible with nature conservation on 20 farms located in the municipalities of Ejea de los Caballeros, Epila, Esplus, Pina de Ebro, Sariñena, Quinto, Fuentes de Ebro and Binaced. The care of the soil, water and excellence in the handling of phytosanitary products are some of the elements contemplated in the framework of the project.
To this end, the Global Nature Foundation has diagnostic tools to assess the state of conservation of biodiversity in the agricultural environment and identify those aspects with the greatest capacity for improvement for the implementation of a plan of good environmental practices in an area of more than 3,000 ha.
With this project, the Foundation's agricultural stewardship network covers a total of 24,000 hectares in five autonomous communities, developing technical work in European projects and with pioneering companies to identify critical aspects for the sustainability of woody crops (olive, pistachio, almond and vineyards), fruit and vegetable crops, cereals and leguminous plants throughout their production chain.
