Grazing for Nature

Grazing is a traditional and extensive way of raising livestock, which contributes to the sustainable management of natural resources through the creation of rural employment, food security, nature conservation and the fight against desertification and climate change.

The NATURALEZA PASTOREADA project was created with the intention of promoting the knowledge and innovation of grazing in Spain with specific actions in 15 livestock farms in 5 different regions: Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Comunidad Foral de Navarra, Comunidad Valenciana and Extremadura.

The aim of this programme is to support and promote grazing linked to nature conservation in protected areas. To this end, it proposes the management of support plans adapted to the reality of each territory that allow the development of new holistic management capacities through participatory processes with local shepherds.

In total, up to 45 differentiated marketing actions are proposed to promote regional and national alliances that improve the profitability and visibility of pastoralism, as well as its economic, social and environmental benefits.

The FGN brings its technical knowledge in conservation and its presence in the 9 protected natural areas where the project is being developed. Its experience is backed by more than 10 LIFE projects in these same conservation areas and by the management of its own regenerative livestock farms in Cáceres and Toledo.

Grazing is an activity that helps diversify food production, acts against global warming, provides employment opportunities, protects animal diversity, contributes to forest growth, promotes rural development, increases food security and reduces livestock feed consumption.
